Kim Reynolds, a reluctant sleuth with mild psychic powers, hopes for a normal life with her policeman lover Mike Gardner. But when Gardner’s supposedly “ex” wife returns, Kim’s life is turned upside down. And when the “ex” ends up dead, it looks like Mike decided to end the marriage for good. Praise for the three prior Kim Reynolds mystery novels by Jacqueline Seewald “Interesting characters abound. Seewald’s take on the dark side of academia will make readers glad their course work is finished.” Booklist on The Inferno Collection. “Kim Reynolds makes a thought-provoking heroine.” Sara Paretsky.
The Bad Wife A Kim Reynolds Mystery Jacqueline Seewald Books
Kim Reynolds is in the supermarket talking to police detective Mike Gardner. They had been in a relationship that was suddenly put on hold when Mike's wife Evelyn, who had walked out on him, reentered the picture. There are two daughters involved and it is not an easy problem to resolve. The two are discussing where they stand with each other and Mike makes an off-handed comment that if he killed his wife all their problems would be solved. A student at the college where Kim works overhears this.It is not too much longer before Evelyn is, in fact, murdered. Mike becomes the immediate number one suspect. The Police Chief and the detective in charge of the investigation are certain Mike is the killer and it isn’t long before he is arrested. When he gets out on bail and another murder is committed.
Kim and Mike’s female partner Bert begin their own investigation, hoping to prove Mike’s innocence.
As a reader, I have mixed feelings about THE BAD WIFE. It was a good read, a serviceable mystery. There are plenty of suspects and a few plot twists to keep the reader off balance. The characters are believable, if somewhat cliched.
But the pacing was uneven. Important scenes were glossed over. Characters did some unbelievably stupid things. The police procedure was definitely suspect. Kim Reynolds has some psychic ability, mostly dreams and “feelings.” This is mentioned often but has little to do with the story. Worst of all, to my sensibilities, part of the solution, an important clue, is practically handed to Kim and Bert on a silver platter, rather than rooted out by them.
Yet, I enjoyed the book and finished it quickly. Will I read another by Ms. Seewald? I’m not sure.

The Bad Wife A Kim Reynolds Mystery Jacqueline Seewald Books Reviews
The Bad Wife is a mystery full of secrets. When Kim’s fiancé’s wife Evelyn, whom he thought had divorced him, shows up back in town to demand half of everything he owns, Kim breaks off relations with him because it’s the right thing to do. But when the wife calls Kim to come to the house to talk, Kim finds her shot to death. Before she can catch her breath, Mike is arrested for murder. Some people, Kim learns, had a motive to kill Evelyn. But even more sinister, some people have a motive to have the murder pinned on Mike, and even to see him dead in prison. Kim works hard to find out who really killed Evelyn, putting her own life in danger in order to save Mike and to exonerate him from his wife’s murder. Great read!
There are three Kim Reynolds mysteries prior to The Bad Wife. I haven’t read any of them so my review of this title might be a little different to someone who has.
I loved the premise of this book; cop and his new love are hindered by his ex-wife who just happens to turn up dead. It had all the makings of a great whodunit and had I read the previous books I think I could have enjoyed this book a lot more than I did.
The characters of Kim and Mike were never really well drawn enough for me to connect with them. There are lots of references to what’s happened in the past and most of it’s done through dialogue. I wanted to know more about Kim because she has mild psychic powers. The only real reference I got to that was a scene in the university library where she warns a boy to be careful about his room-mate. I would have loved to have seen this psychic vision played out some more and maybe more background at that point as to when she first realized her psychic ability and how it’s changed her life.
Many of the scenes I felt could have been longer and played out more to add some layers and depth to the story, but once again I think maybe this is the fourth book in the series and Ms. Seewald didn’t want to seem repetitious to readers who have enjoyed the previous stories.
It’s definitely fast-paced and so ideal if you like a mystery but you’re short on time. I liked the ending and the way everything was concluded in this story. And, I’m intrigued enough to check out earlier Kim Reynolds mysteries to see how Kim and Mike’s story began and then I’d like to re-read The Bad Wife.

"The Bad Wife" by Jacqueline Seewald is the fourth book in the Kim Reynolds Mystery series but it's the first book I've read in the series. And, I highly recommend it!
Kim Reynolds finally found the love of her life, Mike Gardner, a detective for the local police force. They were engaged to be married when Evelyn Gardner, Mike's "ex"-wife, returned to town and announced that she'd never signed the divorce papers. Kim and Mike are devastated but Kim refuses to date a married man and Evelyn refuses to give Mike a divorce. Things are looking pretty bad but, when Evelyn is found dead, they get much worse because the detective in charge of investigating Evelyn's murder seems determined to place the blame on Mike.
When the bad-news wife of Mike Gardner is murdered, he’s the number one suspect. Although they were estranged, she was still living in his house, though Gardner had fallen in love with Kim Reynolds, a librarian. There are those on the police force who’d like to see Gardner take the fall, including the police chief.
Kim has a psychic gift that comes and goes, and although it sometimes warns her of danger, it can’t be relied on. When Gardner is railroaded into jail, it’s up to Kim to prove his innocence. Kim follows the trail into the murdered woman’s past to uncover clues to her death. Each clue she uncovers brings her closer to the murderer, until her own life is in danger.
This is an enjoyable mystery with twisting plot lines, and a number of possible killers. The main characters are likeable, and there’s a nicely developed romance between two secondary characters. It’s the fourth in a series, but I haven’t read the others and had no trouble understanding the background.
